Bådehuset Sommerfest.

Musik
Join us for a beautiful evening of adventurous music in Refshaleøen's cozy Bådehuset. The mini festival is curated by Ancestral Modernism (Ying-Hsueh Chen) & Matt Choboter.

A stone's throw away from Copenhagen Contemporary, Bådehuset is a primitive yet elegant venue with the most clear and beautiful acoustics. Built in 1914, it is a unique and atmospheric venue reminiscent of how things were 100 years.

The event offers:

A celebration of summer and quality music with friends and new friends in the last "Wild West" of Copenhagen.
Triple-bill including: Ying-Hsueh Chen Solo; trio Hémâ and the release of "Unburying, From Liminals, Emerging" (Matt Choboter)
Snacks and drink and optional listening sessions between concerts

Program:

19:00
Doors

19:30
Ancestral Modernism: Water / Sound Bath
Artist: percussionist/composer Ying-Hsueh Chen (TW/DK)

The concert features primitive instruments such as skins, stones, bones, shells, metal and wood to imitate sound and character of water. The concert is a radical meditation on the relationship between sound, material and space. She will also present Morton Feldman's "the King of Denmark", which was written in a few hours at the beach.

21:00
Unburying, From Liminals, Emerging (RELEASE CONCERT)
Artists: composer/pianist Matt Choboter, saxophonists Miguel Crozzoli, Calum Builder, Michal Biel; percussionist Jan Kadereit.

Inspired by studies and immersive experiences in South Indian Classical and Balinese Gamelan music, the compositions live within an extended world - a newly invented tuning system. The compositions evoke a collective trance state that seemingly hovers between wakefullness and dreaming.

22:30
Hémâ
Artists: home-made organ enthusiast, Calum Builder (AUS/DK), percussionist Ying-Hsueh Chen (TW) and pianist Matt Choboter (CA/DK).

The music features exciting home-built instruments including: reconstructed pipe organ, custom-tuned bass selonding (ancient Balinese inspired metallophone), and a custom-made microtonal prepared piano.

Possibility for: Open listening session or jam session to follow concerts.

Ticket Sales: 100 dkk/ 70 dkk (students)

Meet the organizers:

Ancestral Modernism offers unique and thought-provoking concerts with clear themes. Each concert has a strong humanistic mission: to bring people back to their roots through a unique sonic experience that penetrates directly and deeply into the human core.

The concert series brings together musicians, composers and instrument builders to create works that use modern compositional techniques to connect the basic conditions of our ancestors with the rhythms of today, thus establishing a timeless community between people. The goal is to deliver genuine and immersive experiences that activate the primitive part of the brain and allow the audience to sense the world in an intimate way.

Matt Choboter | Danish-based Canadian composer and pianist, Matt Choboter's music paints subliminal sound narratives between the cracks of avant-jazz, experimental and contemporary classical. Informed by non-western cultures and eclectic spiritualism, he embraces liminal psychology and dream work; a rather sentient, animistic existential orientation; and a musical practice which absorbs particular features of South Indian classical and Balinese Gamelan.

A member of Inner Circle Music (NY) , ILK Music (DK) and Songlines Recordings (CA), his music has been described as: "post-jazz of a distinctly personalized kind" (Ron Schepper of Textura); "Densely expressive music" with a "dreamlike aura" (Fabricio Vieira); music that is "reminiscent of very original film music" (Ken Vos)
